VIETNAM’S NUT INDUSTRY: POTENTIAL AND CHALLENGES IN THE GLOBAL MARKET

Vietnam’s nut industry is entering an important stage of development with great potential in the global market. With the increasing trend of consuming clean and nutritious food, Vietnamese nuts have the opportunity to assert their position. However, to make a breakthrough, the nut industry needs to overcome the challenges of deep processing, branding and taking advantage of international trade agreements

In recent years, the trend of consuming clean and nutritious foods is spreading globally. Not only stopping at organic products, consumers are also especially interested in nutritious nuts such as cashews, macadamia nuts, pumpkin seeds… These are not only essential ingredients in a healthy diet but also play an important role in the functional foods and high-end snack industries.

With the advantage of being one of the world’s leading grain exporting countries, Vietnam has an opportunity to make a strong breakthrough. Statistics show that Vietnam’s nut export turnover has reached more than 3.5 billion USD by 2024, with a strong growth trend in 2025. This confirms the attractiveness of Vietnamese nuts in the international market.

There are no small challenges on the development journey

Despite its great potential, Vietnam’s nut industry is still facing many barriers:

  • Export of raw materials accounts for a large proportion: Currently, most Vietnamese nut products are still exported in raw, unprocessed form, leading to low added value.
  • Price fluctuations and strict quality requirements: Raw material prices are unstable, while large markets such as the EU and US set strict inspection standards for quality and traceability.
  • Competition from other countries: Vietnam must compete with countries with strong supply chains and lower production costs such as India, Brazil, and China

What direction for Vietnam’s nut industry?

To reach the world, Vietnam’s nut industry needs a long-term strategy, including:

  • Invest in deep processing: Products like nut flour, nut milk, nut butter are becoming trendy and have much higher profit margins than raw materials.
  • Building a national brand:Vietnamese seeds need to have their own position on the world map, with quality certifications such as USDA Organic, EU Organic to increase customer trust.
  • Take advantage of free trade agreements (FTA): Expand export markets to the US, Europe and Asia – Pacific.
  • Applying modern technology: Improving processing and preservation processes to improve quality and extend shelf life
  • Strengthen marketing and e-commerce: Strongly promote on international e-commerce channels, participate in fairs and connect with major distributors.

Conclude

Vietnam’s grain industry cannot stand still forever. When global consumer demand is opening up golden opportunities, this is the time when Vietnamese businesses need to act decisively. Investing in deep processing, branding and improving quality is the key to helping Vietnam not only be a raw material supplier but also become a powerhouse in the nutritional grain industry.

Today’s actions will determine Vietnam’s position on the world map in the future.
